How to upload 3D models and drawings using the Revit plugin

The Revit Plugin is a plugin developed by Dalux that integrates into Revit, supporting a variety of functions like uploading models and drawings, creating comments, and integrating with the Model validation feature.

You can use the Revit Plugin to upload models directly from Revit to your Dalux project. This article will explain how to perform the model/drawing upload. Please note that you do not upload the '.RVT' model file to Dalux, only the 'daluxbim' file used in Locations.

To learn how to install the plugin and use its other features, read this article

Attention

This plugin only works with full versions of Revit. Please make sure that your Revit version is compatible with the plugin version. Updating Revit may cause problems if the plugin and Revit versions do not match.

Before attempting to upload a model using the Revit plugin, make sure that your project's coordinates are properly set up for upload. This article (Revit Survey Point) can help you if you are unsure or have synchronization issues.

How to upload and update your 3D model and drawing files

User rights

To be able to upload documents from Revit, you need to be in a user group with rights to edit buildings and locations on the relevant Dalux project. If you cannot do this, contact your project administrator.

To upload your model from Revit to Dalux, open Revit, make sure you are logged into your Dalux account in the plugin.

Select project and building

Select or change project by clicking "Change Project" and select a project from the list.

Click on "Upload", and select the building and file you want to upload your model to, then click "OK":

If it is the first time you upload this model, select "new file" in the File field. If you have previously uploaded this model, then select the file you want to update.

Important!

Make sure that the building where you want to upload your Revit file already exists on the Dalux project, as you cannot create new buildings via the plugin.

Upload files

From the main upload screen, you can select the files you want to upload and see the metadata associated with them. Toggle 'Include views' in the top right corner to filter out views for an easier overview. If views are selected to be uploaded and 'Include views' is toggled off, these views will not be uploaded.

Notice

If you are uploading for the first time, you should go through Level mapping, Property mapping, and Discipline mapping first (see below). These settings will be saved for future uploads.

Filename: This is the name of the file in Dalux. Change this under Property Mapping to fill it with Revit properties, or double-click the filename in the list view after selecting it to manually change it.

Version: This is the version of the file that it will get in Dalux after the upload (each export will increase this).

Folder: Select the folder in Dalux Box where the file should be uploaded to.

If a file naming template is attached to the folder, a warning is displayed if the name does not match the template.
If a filename does not match the template, it will not be uploaded.

Uploaded: Date of the last upload of this file.

Active view: Select the view that determines the level they should be mapped to.
Select "No mapping" if you don't want the drawing/sheet to be associated with a level.
For 3D models see Active View (3D) below.

Dalux level: Select the level to which the drawing will be mapped according to the active view.

Number: Sheet number of the drawing (editable in Revit only).

Title: This is the name of the drawing with which it will be shown in Design and Locations. Enter the value manually or map it under Property mapping.

Content description: System metadata field, enter the value manually or map it under Property mapping.

Custom metadata from the project is also displayed here and behaves like 'Content description'.

Select the files by checking the boxes, and the line will be highlighted.

An orange asterisk indicates a mandatory field, you must select something to be able to upload it.

Tips and tricks

You can multiselect by holding down Ctrl or Shift while selecting multiple lines.

Model files

Models behave the same way as drawings. However, there are two main differences.

Export room

Hover over the model icon and select whether or not to include the rooms in the upload.

Active View (3D)

Select the 3D view you'd like to use for the upload. The level of detail (fine is recommended) and only visible objects in this view will be uploaded.

Level mapping

WARNING

If there have already been created levels in your Dalux project, you must refrain from creating levels from your sheets during the upload to Dalux!

The level mapping displays the levels from the model, allowing you to map each one to a Dalux level and assign a name.

You can:

  • Choose existing levels if they have already been created in Dalux.
  • Create a new one based on the level from the model.
  • Select 'No level mapping', and the level will not be imported.

Property mapping

Property mapping allows you to specify the file name and map any Dalux metadata to a Revit property.

Dalux property: allows you to select the system or custom metadata field of the Dalux project. It lists the current value used for each file.
Revit property: allows you to select the properties from the Revit model. It lists the new value that will be used for the Dalux property after clicking 'Commit mapping'.

After you click 'Commit mapping' and upload the files to Dalux, this setup will be saved and reused the next time you upload.
You can easily restore the previous mapping used during the last upload by clicking "Revert to last uploaded mapping" in the lower left corner.

Tips and tricks

Title is the name that appears under Locations, so keep it short and to the point.

If you want to add two Revit properties to a Dalux property, you need to combine them into a new Revit property and then assign that new Revit property to a Dalux property.

Discipline mapping

Discipline mapping allows you to map the 'Discipline' and/or 'Subdiscipline' with user input or a Revit property.

Dalux Property: allows you to select between Discipline or Subdiscipline.
It lists the current value used for each file.
Revit Property: allows you to select the properties from the Revit model.
It lists the new value that will be used for the Dalux property after clicking "Commit mapping".

After you click "Commit mapping" and upload the files to Dalux, this setup will be saved and reused the next time you upload.
You can easily restore the previous mapping used during the last upload by clicking "Revert to last uploaded mapping".

Tips and tricks

Discipline and Subdiscipline are used to sort the drawings under Locations.

If you want to add two Revit properties to a Dalux property, you need to combine them into a new Revit property and then assign this new Revit property to a Dalux property.

Message

At the bottom, you can enter a message to explain the reason for the upload.
Please note that you can only add one message for the entire upload, not for each individual file.

After upload

When you are finished setting up your files and click "Upload", you will see a progress screen.

After all files have been uploaded, you will see the result with a check mark for each successful upload.

If any of the files have not been uploaded, a red information icon will appear to the right of each one; hover your mouse over the icon to inspect the reason.

Notice

Your model will be uploaded in the Locations module as a daluxbim-file. If the model is linked to Dalux Box, it will be saved there as a daluxbim-file as well.

Linked Revit models and loaded .dwg's

If you have linked other file types into your Revit project, they will not all be considered by the Revit plugin. These linked files will not be uploaded when uploading your project using the Revit plugin as the plugin depends on the information available from the Revit software.

Loaded .dwg files

.dwg files loaded into the model that contain 3D objects will be uploaded as one single object:

A .dwg will look like this in Revit (one large selectable object):

This then ends up the same way in Dalux:
